Momentous reports that the outgoing chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, will hand over the reins of the Commission to an interim electoral commissioner until the Senate approves his re-appointment as INEC chairman or vice versa.
After President Muhammadu Buhari re-appointed Yakubu, he submitted his name to the National Assembly for confirmation, with his first term ending on Monday, November 9.
He is expected to hand over the reins of the commission to commissioners whose terms have not expired.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, believes that Yakubu’s reappointment as INEC chairman will serve as a momentum to credible elections in Nigeria.
Prof Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari in November 2015.
