BOKO HARAM TAKES TOTAL CONTROL OF GEIDAM IN YOBE, HOISTS FLAGS

Boko Haram has seized control of a Gaidam town in northeastern Nigeria, the latest to fall into the armed group’s hands in the crisis-hit region, witnesses and a local official have said.

Several residents who fled the Boko Haram attack on Gaidam town in Yobe state said the assault began late last three days, with the group ultimately taking over the parts of the main town.

Some of the residents confirmed that the insurgents have hoisted their flags in some parts of their community, moving from house to house preaching to them to accept their ideology.

Resident said the Army battalion in Geidam is still present in the community, it has not stopped the insurgents from propagating their missions.

“As I speak there is no military in Gaidam local government, Boko Haram come and go as they please.

“So many people from Gaidam have fled to the state capital Damaturu and Niger Republic”.

They were also said to be robbing people as they tried to flee. “I left Gaidam today because it was no longer safe for me and my family,” said trader .

“I couldn’t stay any longer because I came to realise these people have come to stay,” he said.

“I thought they would be there for a few days but from our understanding they have turned the town into their territory.

This comes two days after the terrorists reportedly attacked Gaidam local government area of the state.

Already, some telecommunication networks have been tempered, thereby hampering communication.

Many families have been thrown into panic as they are unable to communicate with their relatives in the communit
The local security has confirmed that Boko Haram had seized control of the Gaidam towns for the past two days in recent weeks.
There are indications that Gaidam was retaken by the military in an offensive earlier this days but details are not clear.

Mamman Mohammed , the spokesman for Mai Mala Buni, Yobe’s governor, could not confirm the issue of hoisting flags, but he confirmed the attack.

Geidam is the hometown of the acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba.
